My dying wish is for an owl/camel hybrid, which I call camowl.

I got a new Bulbasaur.

New Article: I thought I was lucky to find this one - now I'm not so sure. In 1994, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles found themselves thrown into the most insipid Christmas special ever, complete with a zombified Splinter and a lot of scenes featuring yo-yos. It's Christmas With The Turtles, and it's the latest X-E holiday-themed review. Not at all like what you might expect - though there's been other live-action TMNT shows and movies, they've never appeared quite like this. Which is to say, they've never appeared completely and totally shitty beyond belief. I still love them, but this is definitely a faith-killer. That goes for God, too. Click here to read it! Just don't actually go out and watch it. Big mistake.

Kay Bee was selling Pokemon figures on clearance, and after finding a Bulbasaur I didn't own, there was no resisting. Actually, I've kinda lost track of the Pokemon craze - I couldn't bare watching it anymore when they began rotating the classic creatures out in favor of the 150 new jerks from the Gold and Silver games. I know why they did it, but I don't like going to sleep at night knowing that Squirtle isn't trapped in a ball on Ash's belt anymore. It makes me sad.

This particular Bulba might be the best ever - it's a figure that attaches to a Pokeball launching device. If Bulbasaur gets hit, his eyes roll back, displaying knockout lines instead of pupils. Also, when you shoot the thing, Bulbasaur lets out an electronic battle cry. It doesn't exactly sound like him, but I guess it's better than having a figure that doesn't say anything at all.

I also picked up the Pikachu figure, just because my Bulba needed a Pokemon's ass to kick. There's been zillions of toys to come out of the Pokemon franchise, but I'd say these are easily the best. Really detailed and poised, larger than usual, and as an extra special added bonus, the package is written in three different languages. I never knew how to say 'electronic attack sounds' in Spanish before. Now I do. 'Sons d'attaque electroniques!' Or is that French? Ah who the fuck cares.

Wow, I don’t remember this one.
Remember the Barbara Walters’ special where she made the turtles cry by asking them about their mom? They showed up, live-action style, and talked about how they came to be and whatnot. Crazy stuff…it was right around the time they decided to form a rock band and hit the road on their "Coming Out Of Their Shells Tour". I still have their album, a couple of the songs weren’t that bad, but still…crazy…

Ahh, Pokemon. Sure, most of the new Pokemon aren’t as cool as the old ones, but don’t lose hope, Matt. Pokemon is forever. Pikachu and Bulbasaur will always be in your heart.

The new pokemon is a travesty. Every time I see "Pichu" I want to cry.

Yeah, that’s definitely French you’ve got there. Sorry. I’m a French nerd. I’m also a linguistics nerd. I’m a French and linguistics nerd. I’m gonna go put my head in the oven. It’s not gas, so it won’t kill me, and my roommates will probably stop me before I burn myself on the heating element. Good Christ, I need drugs.

There was a Barbara Walters interview where the Turtles broke into tears? Dear sweet Thor, I wish I could have seen that… I do remember the Turtles tour, though. My cousin had a poster from one of their concerts. Oh the shame…

Anyway, anyone else think the turtles have the most psychotic, skull-like faces in that special? Yikes! They look like a combination of Chucky the killer doll and Mr. SkullHead from Tiny Toons/Animaniacs…

Just when I thought I was immune to this site making me remember the worst of the worst (I actively remembered C.U.T.I.E.S fer chrissakes!), someone drags that "out of our shells" concert out of my subconsious. Hmmm. Uhhh. FUCK.

Chestnuts roasted by Andy @ 12/04/2002 10:25 PM

The special was on pretty late, I remember asking my mom if I could stay up to watch it. They kept "teasing" us before each commercial break, saying that the Turtles were coming up "next". When they finally did show the segment it lasted about 2 minutes…3 minutes tops. I felt kinda ripped off, but it was so funny that I didn’t mind!

And yeah, those are the most anemic, creepy looking turtles, ever! In the one picture you really can see the seems in the costume…that’s just sad.

Coming Out Of Their Shells? Is that was the tape was called? My brother got that once. Matt, you should find a copy on Ebay and review it. I imagine the musics pretty bad. Although all I remember is Splinter singning about stepping stones, or something.

Just recently I came across a great TMNT site that has all the ‘Coming Out of Our Shells’ tour songs available for download. Fairly decent quality…better than my existing Pizza Hut cassette. I can remember listening to that tape over and over and over…*remembering* "Splinter! Splinter! This one’s for you! You were the first who said we would come through!" It’s crazy to think what they did to those poor turtles for hype. Let’s hope the future doesn’t hold any TMNT X-Mas episodes. (The new toys look pretty cool!) Here’s the link to that site: http://www.mikeystmnt.com/media/sounds/

I remember when the Turtles performed on Oprah. That was awesome!

The Bulbasaur figure sounds pretty rad. I think I want one now.

I just want to tak ethis wonderful opportunity to say that Pokemon suck. Thank you.

Chestnuts roasted by Nate @ 12/05/2002 6:42 AM

Oh ye of little faith. The new Pokemon ARE cool, Tediursa for example on the cartoon used his cuteness to trick people into liking and caring for him and then he would steel from them! What a badass! Hounddoom – badass. Chikorita – badass. Sure there are, um, lesser pokemon. But there always were, Rattatta anyone? Boring!

It will be a long time before a cartoon as cool as Pokemon comes along again, (think about it, people catch and fight with electric mice, psychic platypi -COOL!), so we should show some loyalty, some support, try to understand the new Pokemon. Becaude that’s what I think is going on here, a lack of understanding, and a lack of understanding breeds fear and hatred.

Oh and Matt, I too miss squirtle being in ash’s ball (!) but doesn’t it at the same time make you feel happy for him that he’s back with the ,(now reformed and fire-fighting), Squirtle-Squad – I mean he wears cool sunglasses!

God bless Pokemon, God bless us all!

The new TMNT designs are up on their official website http://www.ninjaturtles.com Looks like they are trying to make it more serious with an Art style like Animated Batman etc, I’ve recently seen the new He-Man Cartoon and MAN does it suck !!, Prince Adam is voiced by the guy who did Leonardo + most of the rest of the cast is original ex TMNT if you listen hard enough [Clawful = Bebop or Rocksteady ?]

Chestnuts roasted by Kuma Chan @ 12/05/2002 10:32 AM

YES YES! You definately need to review the "Coming Out Of Our Shells" tour.

Chestnuts roasted by Maddox @ 12/05/2002 12:03 PM

the new designs for the turtle figures are pretty sweet, especially shredder and the foot soldiers. bastards actually look like ninjas, as opposed to when they pranced around with purple masks and bright blue arm pads. this of course leads up to the new tmnt animated series coming out in february on the fox network…and after seeing transformers armada, i pray to everything good and fluffy that this doesn’t suck massive donkey testicles. i am actually a fan of the new he-man though, only because teela’s never looked so damn hot. hopefully tmnt will stay true to the original to please the fans, instead of appealing to the younger kids by turning it into pokemon.

Chestnuts roasted by theriothero @ 12/05/2002 2:43 PM

There are 150 more new pokemon coming out in 2003 in pokemon ruby and saphire. They look pretty cool too. I like the neos better then the orginals anyways. Also, matt, i don’t know if you have this or not but i think there is a set of all three of the bulbasaur evolutions. It was a looooooooong time ago though so i dont know if you can find it now.

Chestnuts roasted by kennef @ 12/05/2002 3:25 PM

Went to official TMNT ite and yes the new visual style looks really nice, probably closer to the original comics which I’ve read are alot more serious and violent.

And lets hope it has the class of the Batman cartoons, because the Batman, Batman of the future, Superman and Justice League cartoons are some of the finest you’ll ever see.

Dude, that carl’s junior ad looks like fucking diaper gravy spilling down the screen. I hope it pays well. Where the hell is carl’s jr. anyway?

Please, //Jigglypuff// has to be the most nails pokemon ever. I personally have seen it vanquish pikachu no less than 9786 times on smash brothers.

Oh God, the Coming Out of Their Shells thing? I saw that live whenever it came out (what year was that?). The Turtles did a live action feature on Oprah in support of the tape. Shredder showed up in Oprah’s audience and called out the Turtles, but they didn’t run down there and kick his ass. Those pussies. I always knew Shredder would win if the Turtles ever faced him down on the cartoon.

I have both the "Coming Out of Their Shells" tour concert video and the making of same. It’s…interesting. I was disappointed that the "making of" was more like an "E! True Hollywood Story" minus the years of drug use. They didn’t even show the guys who were in the costumes! They (attempted to) make you think the Turtles are real and talked about how the Turtles decided to stop crimefighting and become rock stars. They also showed the Kickoff party and the preview atop some Marquee in New York. The tour video looks like some Pay-Per-View concert; it was also a stage show (who’s backstory was based on the movie/comic story, complete with Splinter’s missing ear) in which Shredder tries to destroy all music in the world (even Barry Manilow) and takes the theater hostage. You’ll always remember the Deharmonic Convergence Controller, Baxter Stockman’s greatest invention! (And Matt, Pre-Fly Baxter was used.) And wait until you see the Shredder costume! What a piece of $#!+.

I also have the audiotape that I picked up at "All For A Dollar" before they went out of business. The best song, to me, is Splinter’s "Skipping Stones". It’s very peaceful. Pizza Hut went all out for this promo. I remember Raph and Mike, who were the spokesturtles for the tour, showing up on Regis’ show.

I do have one major disagreement with Matt on that article. You think these costumes (they’re the same from the Tour) are worse that Saban’s Super Steroid Turtles? Outside of the Movie costumes, they have *NEVER* made a good TMNT live costume, but I’d take the tour before The Next Mutilation. Outside of Bonesteel and that street gang that sadly only showed up to ruin Mike’s Pirate Radio "Save the Animals" rave, there was nothing good about that show. Where *was* April, anyway?

I, too, would love to see you review the Tour. Just your reaction to Shredder’s costume would be worth the read!

I never remembered "Walk Straight" as being so awesome.

defin-definitely french. I know somebody else already said that, but he was ranting about ovens. I think that ruined his linguistical credibility. Maybe that’s just me.

I just found a Pokemon desk set for 2 bucks at Dollar General. It contains – get ready for this – A BULBASAUR PENCIL SHARPENER. Before I discovered your site, I never would’ve given a thought to buying this crap…but now, I scooped it up with an unparalleled fervor. The other items are a Pikachu stapler, Jigglypuff tape dispenser, and some fruit I don’t know as a tape measure. Look at what you’ve done to me. For shame.

My favorite was the pikchu toy that would swear if you activated the sensor at just the right pace, instead of pikachu, you’d get f-you, f-you.
