On deck is an episode review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - it’s actually one I already reviewed, but it was originally done in July of 2000, and it really sucks. I don’t usually like redoing anything I’ve written about, but this is too good of an episode to pass up on just because I once scribbled three-hundred cursewords about it. It’ll be up later today. Now, the questions!

Chaos writes: I have seen the Worst Witch movie four times, while I was not sick or drugged…seriously, my school felt the need to play the thing to me four freaking times. With that said you can understand why I found your worst witch article so hilarious/disturbingly graphic, it drudged up some old trauma that I would have preferred remained buried. However, and I have no idea if anyone has let you in on this yet, but here in Canada, there is an actual worst witch television series, based solely on the material presented in the worst witch motion picture. There is no Tim Curry, and I think the majority of the cast is different, but the production costs are, well, you know the evil dead prequel? Think that, only with maybe an extra twenty bucks. Thought it was my duty to alarm you of this, do what you wish with this information, but use caution, for this shit is horrifically bad.

REPLY: I’ve gotten boatloads of e-mail over the years about The Worst Witch television series - it really, really sucks, but not in the same fun and cheesy way as the movie. Without Tim Curry wearing the pride hang glider and without Mrs. Garrett wearing a pink wig, there’s just no reason to watch it. (read the Worst Witch article here.

Lindsey writes: I was looking at your forum and I read the old ‘Flibber’s article after someone thought you wrote the book yourself. I can’t believe it! I used to have that book and the projects NEVER worked. My damn flibbers were always just shredded up newspaper. They had a project in there that said you could grow a jungle in your room out of a potato and I was naive enough to believe them. It just sprouted and made my room smell.

REPLY: Ha, I tried that ‘craft’ too. My potato didn’t spawn a jungle, but it did turn black and blue. So at least the directions were good if you’re ever making an art film about a married pair of potatoes with an abusive husband potato. Potatoes. Potatoes. (read the original review here.

Jason writes: I only recently (couple of months ago) came across your site and have thoroughly enjoyed it! What I enjoy most is that I’ve actually come across a lot of the stuff you review even before finding your site! I have had a friend that’s addicted to Kinder eggs and gets them in Canada on a regular basis. Her ONLY reason for going. That and growing up in the era that most your reviewed items hail from sometimes brings back memories that I just don’t need. . . The things I grew up playing with or eating. The things I still have laying around haunting my junk drawer (damn M.U.S.C.L.E guys are still with me and at times I think they’re plotting revenge for allowing my Stormtroopers and AT AT drivers to play “kick the baby” with them…)

Anyhoo, I came across this today actually and it is just disturbing the unholy crap out of me. The freakish thing’s mesmerizing for some reason. You see, my big thing growing up, and to some degree now still, were comic book based action figures. Mostly, they never were very good, but still got lots of play. I’m picky about my comics, but not the toys. I love ‘em. The picture is a prototype for the new Hulk figures they’re making for the new movie. Now, its just my opinion, but I do believe this is the scariest toy I have ever seen! And my sister collected Strawberry Shortcake mercilessly. What’s scarier. . . I don’t want the finished toy. I want this prototype. I can’t explain it either; call it morbid fascination, sleep depravation, or that all my action figures ended up with mixed parts anyways and this one COMES THAT WAY! REPLY: Looks pretty nice, actually. I’m not looking forward to the Hulk movie at the same level I was with Spider-Man or X-Men, but I’m sure I’ll still be there on opening night. I think Hulk would have to be a tougher project to make ‘hip’ - my hunch is that they’re gonna make it even more tongue-in-cheek than Spider-Man. Otherwise, it could come off pretty poorly. In any event, as for your new favorite figure - I’ve always wondered if toy sculptors become embarrassed when they get to the figure’s groin section. Maybe we should ask the Four Horsemen?

Mike writes: (On National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation…) Hi Matt, We have been fans of this movie forever…we watch it each Christmas day and every time I get together with my sister and nephew Matt, even in the summer…when my children were small and my in-laws did not know of the movie I asked my daughter, then just nine, to say grace at the big Thanksgiving dinner, and we went from there…it was hilarious…we decorate the house like Clark, we kick our Santa, we even have a Santa kicking contest, we say, “Real nice” all year long…and on and on….anyway, I found and ordered eight of the moose mugs this year, they should arrive today, and my sister and nephew are coming for Christmas this year for the first time, from Mass. to Okla.,and I want to surprise everyone with the moose mugs and give myself, my son, age 23 and my nephew, age 19, Eddie clothes to wear on Christmas day…I found a place to order the black dickies…I figure I can get the white shoes at a Tux shop…but I don’t know where or how I’m going to get the light blue polyester pants and I’m having no luck yet getting the white v-neck sweaters, even Land’s End doesn’t have that kind of a sweater, so you can see, I need your help…if you know where I can get the pants and the sweaters, please let me know…

REPLY: How would I know where to buy sweaters like the ones Randy Quaid wore in a Christmas movie from 1990? Actually, I do know. But I won’t tell you unless you send me a moose mug. I love those things.

Kevin writes: I was reading your review for Basket Case, and I noticed two things were, well, wrong. For one, in the tenth paragraph, you refer to Duane as ‘Kevin,’
and for another, in the ‘dead body rape’ scene pics, you clearly TRIED to cover up the nipples, but missed by about a mile. My question is, HOW THE HELL TO MISS WHERE THE NIPPLES ARE???? Not that I mind, I’ve seen worse… but, still, it woke me up a little. Now, you’re probably not going to fix it, so why did I write to you? Because I want to spam your mail box. Good day.

REPLY: Whoops. I’m pretty sure that’s the only nipple shot on X-E, if you discount Hulk Hogan. I’m not sure how I missed them. Maybe it was subconsciously intentional. Porn sells. Even if half the mating party is a puppet of a disfigured Siamese twin. Somebody’s gotta have that fetish.

Dan writes: I liked you’re summing up on the Daphne Zuniga science fiction monster follow up to THE FLY. My question is: If you’ve done you’re own review of the sequel, then are you making a review of the Goldblum film?

REPLY: I really love both Fly movies - I chose the second for a review because I assumed more people haven’t seen it and would thus be a little curious. The difference between the two is that the sequel was an entertaining bad movie, while the first was an entertaining good movie. I own both, so I could review The Fly at any time. I’m sure I will one day, but that’s the kind of movie I really want to be on my game for if I’m writing about it. I’d hate to do a shitty review on such a modern horror classic. Everything I’m saying here is bullshit, of course. I just don’t want to watch Jeff Goldblum vomit on a Twinkie ever again. (read the Fly II review here.

Naomi writes: I have been an avid fan of X-E for 3 months now; it has rekindled long forgotten memories about aspects of my childhood, plus it is the most interesting site I have ever seen. Keep up the great work and thank you for bringing a humorous, interesting, and all around wonderful site to the net. I have a question for you regarding a television show that originated in the mid 80s amongst the Nintendo hullabaloo. I can vaguely remember the credits. It is a young boy playing his Nintendo when something happens that causes him to go into the “Nintendo” world. I remember the episodes revolved around certain set Nintendo characters with others from the other games having guest appearances. The part I remember most was the huge talking
gameboy that accompanied the main character through his exploits. I know you must get a barrage of emails of day, but if there is any chance you can clear this up I’d appreciate it.

REPLY: Finally, an easy one. That’d be Captain N: The Game Master. Characters from a lot of games appeared - Kid Icarus, Punch-Out, Metroid, you name it. Here, check this article out - it’s got Captain N teaming up with Link and Zelda - click here.

Steph writes: I didn’t think your comic was too bad. I’d say you could do worse. But then I’m pretty biased towards anything involving the Silver Surfer.

Tricia writes: I just had to mail, I saw an advert for NADS on a shopping channel - yes u got it I have no life - I missed the telephone number so went on the net to see if I could find it. Your page made me pee myself laughing - BUT does it work?

REPLY: Making people urinate is definitely the opus. As for your question - I didn’t like wax myself or anything, but I’d have to say that this is a pretty poor product. PPP, for short. You’d essentially be doing the same thing if you rid yourself of hair by applying strips of electrical tape to your legs and ripping the strips off as hard as you can. Nads does have an advantage though - you can’t eat electrical tape.

I know the last thing you need is another movie recomendation, but do you think sometime you could write a review of Killer Klowns From Outer Space? It’s kind of hard to get a hold of. I looked for it on amazon.com and for reasons I’ll probably never understand, they only sell the Spanish version. It’s worth tracking down, though, if only for the. . .interesting. . .theme song by some Orange County punk band called The Dickies. Oh, and of course "the big clown" at the end (wait, maybe I’m giving away too much).

Killer Klowns is hard to find of video, yeah, but the DVD is apparently a lot easier to find.

I really want to see Matt review No Holds Barred, or even Over the Top. It’s a film about armwrestling that even had arm wrestling action figures for it.

So think, they made a 2 hour movie about ARM WRESTLING. Then they thought kids would love to play with toys that did nothing but arm wrestle.

I just bought No Holds Barred, should be here in a few weeks. I’m really looking forward to reviewing it - probably moreso than any movie since Worst Witch or the Corey Haim Diary.

I remember The Worst Witch in Grade 5, and how the one with the pink hair looked like my Grade 5 teacher. I made a point to inform everyone in the class of the resemblence. Good times.

This doesn’t have much to do with anything, but I think a few good reviews/articles would be Madd Matt celebrates Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. For some reason I liked the Madd Matt articles a lot. Another good videogame review would be Battletoads. I don’t know if anyone out there ever played the game for nintendo, but I fondly remember spending more time beating up my friend that beating up the enemies. Well, just some idea’s for the future.

Since everyone is throwing movies out there, what about "Heavyweights"? It’s a PG rated Disney movie about kids at a fat camp. It’s really poorly acted and marginally better than Nickalodeon’s "Salute your Shorts" - Except for Ben Stiller, who’s absolutely insane.

I don’t know anyone else whose seen it, but I loved it because I just don’t understand - Is this an intentionally bad movie? Was Ben Stiller "’blue screen’ed in" post-production to at least make it watchable? Could a movie that makes fun of fat kids ever be bad?

Tim - you might be onto something with the Madd Matt Thanksgiving article. I had fun doing them, but by the third one I felt like the joke ran it’s course. Then again that never stopped me before. I’m sure he’ll be back long before next Halloween. Especially because I bought him makeup from the post-Halloween closeout sales.

Hmmm… mention of "Salute Your Shorts" brings back memories of "The Adventures of Pete & Pete". Anyone else watch that show, back in the day? I think it was more early 90’s than 80’s, but man, was it hilarious. Surreality just got funky, as they say.

And secondly, Matt, it’s great that "Dark Crystal" finally got a review and all… but how on earth have you not yet gotten around to reviewing the OTHER fantasy/Muppet movie from the 80’s, "Labyrinth"?! Come on, man- David Bowie stealing babies, juggling crystal balls, and launching musical numbers with a gaggle of Jim Henson creations. I mean, I liked DC and all, but good God, "Labyrinth" has DAVID BOWIE as the Goblin King; that alone makes it the superior movie. Is there any hope for a review of this fine cinematic experience?

"The Adventures of Pete & Pete" and "Salute Your Shorts". The mention of those shows brings back memories. Strange memories, but good ones at the same time. Nick used to have the best shows in the early ’90s, and now they all suck. But what can you do?

Anyway, I don’t know why but I used to love watching "The Worst Witch" (the movie, not the TV show which I’ve thankfully never seen) whenever the Disney Channel would show it sometime around Halloween. I guess it had something to do with how completely cheesy (in the good way) it was. It might also have had something to do with Tim Curry in his very own, very horrible-looking music video. But what can I say? I was younger and a whole hell of a lot more easily amused back then. Those were the days…

By the way, I love the site. And I’d love to see the return of Madd Matt, too. =)

That monster in your cartoon (…which yes, is far worse than your last one. Well done.) reminds me of the monsters* from that old laser-tag-ish show where you had to shoot your tv screen with a laser gun. What was that called, why haven’t you reviewed it yet, and didn’t you like how I segued that?

DAMN!!! There were Over the Top toys? Why didn’t anyone tell me? Funny this comes up today because I was quoting this movie at work yesterday.. "this hat is like a switch"

Hey Aaron, that Laser Tag-ish show you’re thinking of is Captain Power. It pitted Captain Jonathan Power and the Soldiers of the Future against Lord Dread and the Biodread Empire. I think the idea was to use the toys based on the show to shoot at holographic areas on the monsters in the T.V. show itself. Thus, you scored "points" or something. The whole thing was a sort of T.V. show/videogame/ action figure mutation that didn’t really catch on. You could still find the toys on sale as closeout items at outlet stores years after the show had been canceled. But, interestingly, Lord Dread seems to have exerted a strong influence on the appearance of the Borg in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Was that the geekiest observation you’ve ever heard or what?

I searched the archives and I asume Matt will be re-reviewing the Fly episode. You shouldn’t be so hard on yourself Matt it was hilarious, still I’m looking for ward to the new review.

What made me laugh in the original review was that the Turtles needed to find an antidote. One of my stongest memories of the Turtles was that they ALWAYS seemed to need an antidote for something. Or did I just see this epiode a bunch of times?

Anybody else notice the Hulk Prototype has 2 right feet and its ribcage can pivot independantly from its waist? OK, I have waaaay too much spare time.
BTW any more Turtle Eps up for review Matt? We hardly got any here in the UK (hell we hardly got any of the Transformers Cartoons either, yet the toys still sell well - weird), and it’s just fun to read your take on Cartoons.

Wow, memory overload. I loved Pete & Pete and Salute Your Shorts…even the Pinsky episodes. I remember the capture the flag ep with Donkeylips as always being my favorite…maybe it was because Budnick was pelted with water balloons I secretly wished were bullets…eh, we’ll never know.

I also remember the Pete & Pete where the older Pete falls in love with the lead singer of Luscious Jackson. Anybody? This DID happen right? It’s not the fumes…I hope…

Over here in MA we have a tv channel called Noggin and it plays old episodes of Pete and Pete, Clarissa Explians it All, Ghost Writer, and even Degrassi Junior High(Anyone else remember this show?). On a different note, if you are going to do the No Holds Barred review Matt, you HAVE to review Santa With Muscles and/or Mr. Nanny.

Oh man. Pete and Pete. The only thing I remember from that show is that the younger Pete had his own personal super hero. The guy was retarded or something. That was a wierd show.

Electrical tape does not stick to skin or hair. Electrical tape comes off nicely when pulled. Electrical tape never made me scream so much I was afraid the neighbors would call the police.

pete’s superhero was ARTIE! the strongest man… in the world. what a great show. and as far as i know, the only thing elecrical tape sticks to is… electrical tape.

If you think you can stomach a movie worse than any you’ve reviewed here, check out Human Highway if you can find it. If you’re a fan of Neil Young or Devo, however, you might find it to be one of the best movies you’ve ever reviewed.

Hey Everybody! Remember My Secret Identity? This was another great late (or should that be late great, nevermind) eighties show. It starred Jerry O’Connell, best remembered as Vern, the fat kid from Stand By Me. However, he had trimmed down quite a bit by the time this show started and looked completely different. Anyway, the plot revolved around the misadventures of a teenage kid who accidently acquired super powers thanks to his mad-scientist next-door neighbor. He called himself "Ultraman," a name he shared with a far less entertaining superhero.

Pete and Pete is currently on the Noggin; however, Degrassi Junior High is not. Instead there is the new Degrassi, with stupid characters with no semblence to the classic characters of yesteryear (though Spike’s daughter was supposed to be on it or something if I recall… Spike was such a slut). Damn, Degrassi High was a great show (Junior High and Street of were ok too). Dwayne got AIDs from busting up the condom machine and eating the pizza … classic moment… and the rest, Wheels and BLT and Snake… the whole crew.
Little Pete Wrigley’s superhero was Artie, the Strongest Man… In The World. He was played by Toby Huss for a couple of seasons until the Farewell My Little Viking (1 and 2) in which Dad convinced Artie that Pete didn’t need him and Pete that Artie had left him. Sad, sad episode. However, the show continued and continued to feature such characters as Mr. Slurm, Bus Driver Stu Benedict, Endless Mike, Paper Cut (during the Artie days), Pitstain, Joyce Wrigley, Mr. Tastee, Captain Scrummy, Don Wrigley, Petunia, Ellen Hickle, Nona F. Mecklenberg, and everybody’s favorite charcter, Clark the Turtle (from the Rangeboy episode).
The episode with Luscious Jackson was Dance Fever, it did occur, in season 3.
Salute Your Shorts was another classic. Boddy Buttnik, Telly Redford, Z.Z. Ziff, Edward "Donkeylips" C. Gelfen, Dr. Kahn, Kevin "Ug" Lee, Ronnie Pinsky (Micheal Stein was better), Sponge Harris, and Dina Alexander. The best episode was the one with Zeke the Plummer. I wish Zeke would have kilt that Buttnik character and Pinsky even though he didn’t get there ’til season two. The Jamie Mallet, Jr., episode sucked a lot too.
I shouldn’t know this shit about stupid shit like this, ya know? Whatever. Degrassi was good, as was Pete and Pete and Salute Your Shorts. Right up there with them was You Can’t Say That On Television, the show that was Canadian and had Alanis Morrisette on it. Remember it? If you said "I don’t know", you got "slimed". They had the same 4 sketches every show, like the firing squad thing were the guy would stand in front of the kid and yell, well, "FIRE!". That was classic too. Nickolodeon had some good shit. Too bad it sucks weiners now. Too bad indeed.

Matt - I just bought a movie at a flea market that I think you’d love. And by love I mean hate. But we all know how things work around here. It’s called "Pulsebeat." It must have been made to cash in on the mid-80s workout craze. The acting is terrible, every 5 minutes there’s a workout sequence, bad 80s music abounds, softcore every so often, blah, blah, blah. Best $5 I ever spent. You’d love it.

Well obviously the TMNT post isn’t up yet, but will be tomorrow. :) Had an unexpectedly busy weekend. Great comments guys, nice to see everyone participating. If I sound cheesy it’s because I’m currently affixing Christmas lights to every square inch of the apartment and I feel like a stubblier Martha Stewart.

Also on deck for next week - a first-hand review of the Odyssey 500 Video Game System, which I just picked up in the box almost totally unused for three bucks, hooray.

The TMNT episode review wasn’t up yet when I checked in just now so I re-read Matt’s review of the first episode. I think it contains one of the all time nost hilarious sequences ever on X-E, alongside the "bever fever" sequence and the make-shift Snorks-related Scout song sequence, here it is: We also get a rare shot of the boys without their eyemasks, which make their heads look a lot like bottom-heavy water balloons. It seems weird to see them without the masks, almost like they’re naked or something. I was going to avert my eyes, but I just couldn’t do it. It was all too erotic. Especially with April in the room."

I love this new updates section. I read it everyday. I remember the first time i found this website. I was doing a Google search for "crappy websites". This was the first one that showed up. Matt equals cool in my book.

Actually, I’m kind of tired of Madd Matt, but I actually think he’d fare better doing Thanksgiving stuff. How about MM only shows up at non-Halloween holidays? Madd Matt’s Arbor Day, anyone? As for Labrynth, let’s not forget that it also stars Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly, who had one of the most disturbing scenes in recent memory in the film Requiem for a Dream.

I don’t think that the laser taggish show Aaron was thinking of was Captain Power. There used to be another show that was under the same concept, but you bought video’s. You would have a gun and a sensros that stuck to the corner of the TV and you would shhot at the monsters on the video. There would be different settings on different videos like a submarine, a haunted house and others. For the life of me I can not remember what this think was called, can anyone help me out?

Oh come on now! Am i the only one on earth who used to watch The Adventures of Beans Baxter??? Twin Peaks? Now those are two shows that deserve a review!!!

I mean, what an original show, having the ability to fly and propel yourself with aerosol cans!

I’d like to state that though recent, Rocko’s Modern life was the best show Nick ever put out. Also, wasn’t Nona’s father on Pete & Pete played by Iggy Pop?

Does anyone remember this ancient show that Nick used to play about a Mennequin that would come to life when this old Magician put this special felt cap on his head? I can’t remember the name and it’s been bugging me for years,

The show with the mannequin and the hat was "Today’s Special". With muffy the mouse, sam the guard. And so on. I forget the mannequins name now, and same with that girl who for some reason worked after hours…oh wait his name was Jeff.

We took a family trip to Canada when I was really young–I was around 6 yrs. All I remember of the trip is this one time in the hotel room while I was looking out the window one of my parents pointed to this building and told me Today’s Special was filmed there. That’s all I remember of the trip.

OK Bombadiel are you serious about Rocko’s Modern Life? I’m not saying its bad, its pretty good at times but really its just Nickelodean’s three miliionth attempt to repeat the hilarity and success of its classic boundry pushing, anthropomorphic weird-fest Ren and Stimpy. Ren and Stimpy’s influence can be seen of many cartoons today eg, Angry Beavers, in obvious ways and Dexter’s Lab in the way it likess to prod fun at the all American way of life, but it remains the best. Today’s best cartoons are once again action cartoons, the reign of great children’s comedy cartoons was the early to mid 90s in the wake of Ren and Stimpy and The Simpsons, great cartoons of that era included Eek the cat, The Tick and Animaniacs. Rocko’s holds a candle to none of them.

Killer Klowns is great stuff (but no Dickies music video on the otherwise-excellent DVD; it’s on most of the VHS editions, for crissakes!!).

Concerning Labyrinth, I believe Matt already commented on Jen Connelly’s demanding role in Requiem for a Dream, in haiku form no less. Rather than search for which article it’s attached to, I think I’ll go check out the Dark Crystal one to see if my favorite part is mentioned (Fizjig’s ear/side-spliting reaction to being told to stay behind - second only to the ‘SQUIRREL!!’ scene in Xmas Vacation for endless looping purposes).

Rocko was indeed inferior to early Ren & Stimpy, but it had a number of truly inspired episodes (the search for Ed Bighead’s estranged son springs to mind). But yes, Eek and Animaniacs were far better, with the Tick leading the pack in my book after the brilliant-yet-doomed Sam & Max.

Pete and Pete moments to remember:
-Artie gives up the superhero biz and takes up a job selling aluminum siding
-Riboflavin is used as a crucial time-travel ingredient during Daylight Savings Time
-We learn that steamed-up car windows equal instant drive-in theatre sex (that may have been the same episode, now that I think of it)

As for Salute Your Shorts, does anyone remember the answer to the radio trivia question none of the kids could answer (What color is a giraffe’s tongue)? I do, as did Ug, but the question is DO YOU?!

Finally (damn, that was long), the ‘cams’ link is great, but I demand MORE KRANG (and more Get a Life, while yer at it)!

I think battletoads was a great game. Then again, Marble Madness had to be my all-time favorite, so my views may be considered a little void.

I also saw ‘My Secret Identity" mentioned up there, a good Idea I think, although I can only ever remember him using the aresol cans so he could look into some girls bedroom. And he could only do the can thing because he was lighter than air couldn’t he? When I got old enough I thought that he should just float away or something. (or was he as light AS air? I don’t really know that much about the show, but I’m pretty sure air changes density as you go up, I don’t know how high he could fly. I don’t think it was a very scientific show. end bracket)

A giraffe’s tongue is black, isn’t it? I seem to remember that being the answer from that episode. Or purple, but I think it was black.

And does anyone remember the episode where Sponge got it on with that girl in the phone booth? That put such a smile on my face, seeing that little nerd get some action while the others watched in disbelief. (Wait, now that I think about it, that’s kind of creepy… I wouldn’t want 5 of my friends watching while I made out with some chick. Sponge was a freak!)

So what were your favorite episodes of Pete & Pete? I loved the one where older Pete got a job as a lifeguard at the public pool, and was pitted against young Pete, determined to bring the tyranny of "adult swim" to an end. I don’t remember much of anything abot it, but it was an eclectic team of video game characters (I think) that rode around in a monster truck that talked, and one of the characters was a basketball with arms and legs. What the crap was that? Anyone? Anyone?

My fave ep of Pete and Pete was when little Pete stayed up all day and night for like a week, with his friends.

The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Salute Your Shorts, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, Hey Dude (I can still sing the theme song to that show), and Welcome Freshmen, which I only slightly remember. What about The Secret World of Alex Mack? I loved that show, too. And then there were those two game shows, Legends of the Hidden Temple and Global Guts. Aaahhh! Nostalgia overload!

While we’re still on the topic of old TV shows, am I just imagining things or did there used to be a show on Nick where these kids could teleport from one place to another? I know I don’t have a big enough imagination to make this up, and I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called.

I don’t know if anybody noticed this but doesn’t spongebob seem to be a knock off of rocko’s modern life? The main character is on his own but very childlike, has a stupid friend (Patrick/Heffer), works at a minimum wage job (Rocko at the comic book shop/Spongebob as a frycook at the Krusty Krab), Annoys his nextdoor neighbor (Mr. Bighead/Squidward). It all seems very similar. Do you think anyone at Nick realized this?

Getting off of the Nick shows for a second, anybody remember Square One TV, the show that "made math fun"? It was a sketch-based variety show that periodically had Music videos and cartoons and would always end with Mathnet (To Cogitate and Solve [scary I remember that...]) So… anybody?

I remember Square One. They had the stupid Pac-Pan parody "Math Man." I was always pissed off that he could do square roots and I was like 7 (and stupid) so I couldn’t. Then every once in a while he’s get it wrong and the tornado guy would eat him. That always gave me personal satisfaction for some unholy reason. Wasn’t "Square One" the math equivalent of the science show "3-2-1 Contact"?

I’m not American so I don’t know if it ever played on Nick, but it played here on a channel that seems to have played a lot of the Nick shows you’ve mentioned so I’ll mention it. ""You can’t do that on Television" with none other than Alanis Morrisette. (it doesn’t run now i hear because she bought all the rights to it, and won’t let them go.) The other thing I want to bring up is a gameshow for kids that I remember, it was video game themed. Had some kids playing video games, the top kid or the top two kids go to run through this maze at the end attaching video games to themselves, and trying to collect either #’s or just had to run the maze in an allotted time to keep the games. Bizzarro.

Hey asruidet, I don’t know where you’re from, but here it was called Bots Master. I really liked that show. A few months ago I spent a week trying to find pics of the bots online and had no luck at all. I still think my favorite obscure childhood cartoon is C.O.P.S.

Has anyone seen that new show called Fighting Foodons on FOX? It’s like those old Food Fighter toys mixed in with pokemon. Very odd stuff, if you’ve never seen a cartoon about people for dumplings for heads kicking the crap out of animals named applegator (very strawberry shortcake land kind of name there) you should watch it. Mmmm…yep…so..yep.

I’ve seen that Fighting Food-Ons show. Very wierd. It’s one thing to see Pikachu go around and say nothing but it’s name, but to see something go around saying nothing but Fried Rice in the worst Japanese accent every is far wierder.

It’s one of those movies that’s just so horrible, it makes you seriously question the people who made it. I think a group of 8 year olds got together and said "Let’s make a film about the funniest thing ever!" and got their parents to hire a film crew and actors. The entire movie is based on fart jokes. There are even fake commercials. If I had a hand in the making of the film "American Flatulators", I’d never be able to show my face in public. Ever. It’s that embarassing.

In fact, I’m embarassed to admit that I own this movie and you would be too. It even says that on the back of the box. It’s perfect XE review material.

I totally remember Degrassi Junior High. I LOVED that show. I think it was a Canadian based pre-teen drama on PBS that paved the way for future lame pre-teen dramas. This one tackled all the *tough* issues like underage drinking, drugs, and the ever-dreaded-pre-marital-pre-teen-sex. (How’s that for hyphen usage?) I loved the storyline of Snake (You know the pregnant chick with the white spikey hair). There’s nothing quite like watching dramas that face tough life situations all the while using Canadian accents… "What are you talking aboot? I don’t use drugs, da’ and frankly I’m a little hurt that you would suggest that I’m hanging oot with bad seeds. Those are my friends and I wish you were dead, eh!"

Degrassi High and Jr. High were fun shows. I don’ remember them ever saying "aboot" though ;).
Today’s Special was such a strange show.

Okay, let’s all pause for a moment and remember The Pirates of Dark Water. Was that an original concept for a cartoon or what? Fantasy adventure on the high
seas–the possibilities were endless! Unfortunately the show was produced by Hannah-Barbara at a time when they were going bankrupt and didn’t last very long at all. I noticed some parallels between this cartoon and Masters of the Universe (the main characters in both shows were blone princes, MOTU had a character named "Teela" and Dark Water had one named "Tula") but Pirates of Dark Water held its own. Also, the artwork in the new MOTU show looks very similar to Dark Water. I think the main problem with Pirates of Dark Water was that it came out slightly before "young adult" cartoons caught on–and this was the target audience. It featured one of the most genuinely evil cartoon villains ever–the pirate lord Bloth. When viewers first met Bloth in the opening episode of the cartoon, he was executing one of his underlings. Now come on, did Skeletor or Shredder ever actually kill people? This was heady stuff! You can still order a video of the first five episodes of Pirates of Dark Water on amazon.com. Its worth your while, whether you remember the show or not.

The Urinator ep. (GREEN WATER!) from Pete and Pete was perhaps my favorite, but a show I remember more is Clarissa Explains it All. I can’t remember if I was physically able to do so at the time of the show’s airing, but I SO wanted to do Clarissa/Mellisa/whatever. Hell, I still do (but I don’t watch her Sabrina show). I remember (or I made it up in my head) visiting the set on a backstage (moreso than what the ‘normal’ folk get) trip to Nickelodeon Studios (at Universal, in Orlando) and watching a clip with a bunch of people of the first ep. of the explanation of the training bra incident.

Hey Dude was great, too. Anyone remember when they wrote out that one guy and he came back in a later episode (another season?) as a millionaire or some crap, only to find out that his winnings would not be presented since he wasn’t 21. So he had to stay and work off the debt for the stuff he bought (why not return it?)

You Can’t Do That on TV was GREAT, with that Monty Python-esque opening credit sequence. I miss it. I miss it so….

I hated the Nick game shows EXCEPT for Double Dare with the hypochondriac host (Mark Summers), who, if you think back, also had a Halloween show dealy where he drove a bunch of kids to a haunted house and kept doing magic tricks. But even worse were those old shows (think back to the heyday of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show) that would talk about video games and try to give viewers "awesome tips and secrets". These things usually came on early in the morning or other time slots that were outside the obvious demographics’ viewing time, and they were far cornier than the few shows on today that devote time to the same subject (but are now more widely accepted and played by older gamers). These shows weren’t on Nick, I don’t think, so maybe it was some local access crap I’m thinking of.

As for Spongebob, I like the show for some reason (bought the DVDs), but I wouldn’t say that it’s all that similar to Rocko. I think it’s quite different in most respects, certainly in the overall tone, but as for my opinion of what Nick execs would think of the comparison, I’m under the impression that everyone over there is high anyway for screwing Invader Zim over like they have.

AND DON’T GET ME STARTED ON FREAKAZOID OR DUCKULA! They are toon gods among men in my book.

I’m trying to remember C.O.P.S. I remember a show with high-tech cops where one episode had one of the villains copy a cop’s fingerprints with some device or other, wore the prints (with gloves or with them grafted to his skin or something) and frame him for crimes. I obviously don’t recall it too much, but I watched it enough. Didn’t it play on the same network as the toon with the dinosaurs who transformed into bipedal forms and battled it out with evil ones? I SHOULD be able to remember the name since I watched it faithfully, but I’m at a loss. I’m NOT talking Dino Riders ("brought to you by Tyco!") or Denver the Last Dinosaur here, though now that I mention it Denver may have been on the same network at this time.

Pirates of the Dark Water was good, but I preferred Conan the Barbarian, and, especially, ExoSquad. That show was so great. Oh wait! Even better: GARGOYLES!! Best show EVER? No, but damn close. But with PotDW, well, they had the pirate thing going (I wanna be a pirate), but Blog’s goon execution sounds like what Dustin Hoffman did at the beginning of that movie Hook.

More Salute Your Shorts MADNESS: Anyone else ever think that your circle of skool-time friends/associates resembled the archetypal kids from the show? I know me and my friends did, at least for one conversation. I think I was Sponge (I once wore glasses and LIKED skool, can you imagine?), though I deny it to this day. Of course, I also remember mentally assigning family members the personalities of the Tanner family (and co.) from Full House, so I’m quite possibly alone in this (and quite possibly insane). But to expand upon the Bobby Budnick/Gary Coleman connection (thanx nuzzles), simply check out the imdb listing for young Budnick (real name Danny Cooksey) to see his other accomplishments. I think you’ll be amazed. I recognized him in T2 (and wouldn’t shut up about it), but he was also Montana Max in TINY TOONS! My God, that’s another show I could talk about for fucking ever.

2. I forgot to mention in my Pirates of the Dark Waters comment that while in TMNT Shredder may not have killed his henchmen, Krang certainly would’ve disintegrated Baxter Stockman if that damn fly hadn’t slipped in!

3.(ok I lied, but it’s important!) Muppet Babies had an EXCELLENT extended version of its theme song ("a-ni-mal DANCE!"), as did most Disney toons (Rescue Rangers, Gummi Bears, Talespin, the list goes on). They are the versions you generally find on kazaa and similar download sites and they are a MUST-HEAR for everyone on the planet as far as I’m concerned. MUST. I’ll explain later, should anyone care (which is doubtful).

Sort of like transformers but not really because they wore masks and they each had their own vehicle that could transform into another vehicle. I think they continue to play Degrassi episodes on one of the stations here. Serious. All 3 or 4 of the series, from Kids of Degrassi St, to Degrassi Jr High, to Degrassi High. They also play the new series, which is based around Spikes daughter. Just as a note it wasn’t snakes kid, it was this other guy who’s name I forget who did a bunch of acid one show and jumped off a bridge and fucked his brain all up. Snake was friends with Joey, he was the tall blonde one who is now principal on the new show. Wheels was the one who got all drunk, went driving and killed some people, or crippled someone, something like that. Canadian’s don’t really say aboot, thats all lies. Trust me, I say ABOWT not Aboot. Oh well, y’all. Freakazoid was awesome. Gargoyles was awesome for the first few seasons, but then they went to that Island and it sucked the series right into the shitter.I also remember Pirates of Darkwater, but rememeber thinking it was lame. How about the old D&D cartoon…haha…whoops.

Yes the kids on those old Nick game shows were really dumb. I think they just went on to be popular and didn’t even care about what the show would be like.

There’s a channel called Nick GAS that shows a lot of those old game shows. The contestants on Nick Arcade were particularly inept. You’d think the fact that the word "Arcade" was in the title would indicate that some video gaming skills would be required,but the contestants were usually incredibily pathetic. My particular favorites are the contestants who avoid the enemies altogether in the video challenges, or can’t seem to do anything except jump up and down. Last night’s example "Your mission for Sonic the Hedgehog is to get 25 rings in 30 seconds" The idiot then proceeds to completely avoid the rings.

Overall, the channel is good for nostalgia and a good laugh at the idiocy of the contestants, but I still think the greatest channel was the Sega Channel. I hope there’s a PS2 channel in the near future…….

dude, just read your review or rainbow brite’s visit to the zoo… scary. just thought you might like to know, rainbow brite didn’t just have a red headed boyfriend. she also had a boyfriend with blue hair. (they looked just alike except for the hair and outfits.) i’m pretty sure she also had a lesbian lover with orange hair and a southern accent. not quite as scary as mrs. garrett with pink hair and a texas accent, but, still not bad. i think they can be found in "rainbow brite and the star stealer," which is easier to find than most old he-man cartoons.

Tell me, have you seen any episodes of an english D&D style gameshow called Knightmare? I hope you have. Knightmare.com has details about it that I could never do justice. If you have never seen this I recommend getting hold of a few off of the Knightmare Trading Post website. You could do some wickedly harsh reviews as many of the people who were on the show died in many stupid ways and were crap. The early shows were better. But any show where you get to put a giant hornéd helmet on a small child while Goblins and psycho monks tried to cut their skin off unless they had the right password or a S-H-I-E-L-D spell is top notch in my lexicon.

Well, I’m not really sure what everyone has against Pinsky from Salute Your Shorts. The dude was obviously superior that ol’ Mikey. It was blatantly clear that he could have had any girl in the camp, ESPECIALLY Dina. All Michael could get was Z.Z. or MAYBE Telly. ANYWAYS, I too remember casting the roles of Salute Your Short’s characters to fellow classmates. It was probably around 7th grade or so. Fond, disfigured memories. I heard mention that Nickelodeon has ‘no good shows on anymore.’ Have you seen Invader Zim? In my opinion, it surpasses some of the greats in comedy, such as Rocko or Ren & Stimpy. Check it out if you haven’t seen it! I read the review of ‘The Worst Witch’ and horrible memories arose. Tim Curry scares me. I hate that part in Home Alone 2 when he smiles like the Grinch. It sends tingles. Anyways…have any of you heard of ‘The Wickedest Witch?’ It starred the actress who played Blanch on the Golden Girls with Muppet-esque gargoyle-type creatures called ‘Grievals’ who loved game shows or something. It aired on (I think) NBC years ago and I have it taped, but I haven’t watched it in ages. I remember it being fairly entertaining…I think…or I may just be insane. Who knows.

Yes, the show where they rode dinosaurs was indeed Dino Riders. Matt reviewed it a while back from the video tape that is peppered with Tyco toy commercials. The show had great potential, with Charlie Adler (master voice talent) along for the ride, but I only remeber the pilot ep. from that same tape. Incidentally, IMDb lists the show, and they also recommend ("if you like this title") Leprechaun 4: In Space. But WHY?

help me out here. it was an NBC show, early nineties i guess, i cant rmember what it was called, part fo the saved by the bell saturday morning lineup. the show was about a co-ed boarding shchool and the antics that went on. i remember the school mascot being "the middle feild onions" any info on this?

"Danger Mouse" was my introduction to British humor. How could you not love a show where the narrator stops to comment on the surreal plots or crack bad jokes?

My parents hated "You Can’t Do That On Television," but my sisters and I loved it to death. I can still recite the most famous quotes… "Water!" "I don’t know." (Look at the sky and check for falling slime.) "Aaaahh…I heard that!" And, my personal favorite, "What do you think’s IN THE BURGER?"

"Square One" was one of my favorite shows in the early 90s. I loved "Mathnet." Tough Kate Monday, sensible Pat Tuesday, and silly George Frankly were good for a laugh and a lesson in the one school subject I still suck at to this day.

"Out of Control" was a long-time favorite. I liked Herb the slimy car-salesman-type guy (don’t ask - I still have this thing for 80s sleazeballs).

I never got into "Pete and Pete" and "Ren and Stimpy" - both were too weird for me as a kid. I’d probably at least appreciate the latter more now that I’m older.

The early 90s Nick shows ("Hey Dude," "Salute Your Shorts," "Welcome Freshman") just did not appeal to me at all. "Freshman" was a bit too soap-opera-y. I forget why I never got into the other two.

Didn’t get to see a lot of "Clarissa Explains It All," but what little I did see was very cute. I loved her talking to the camera, and her guy friend coming in through the window.

"Today’s Special" was another favorite. I looked it up at Amazon.com last spring, and there are some episodes availble for sale (or were, anyway). I loved Muffy the Mouse and her frilly little apartment, and Jeff and his wonderful dance numbers.

Oh, god, I LOVED "The Pirates of Dark Water!" I’m a fan of swashbuckler and pirate movies, so this was right up my alley…and my sister’s a fan of fantasy, so this was one of the few shows we’d watch together without starting a war over who got the remote control first.

"Voltron" kicked ass. I preferred the red one. I always loved anything red, or anyone who had red hair or fur. It was (and is) my favorite color.

Don’t remember "My Secret Identity," though I must have seen it at one time…

I remember the MC Hammer cartoon. Wish I didn’t. It was pretty bad….but the New Kids on the Block cartoon was worse.

I’ve always enjoyed every incarnation of "Where In the…is Carmen Sandiego?", and the game show (which conviently ran after "Square One" in the early 90s) was no exception. I rock at geography. Trivia: The woman who played The Chief, Lynne Thigpen, recently passed away of cancer.

The quasi-future-with-fairy cartoon was "Kidd Video," one of the stranger 80s attempts to cash in on fads (music videos, in this case). All I remember was that it was weird as hell, and I had a crush on the curly-haired guy for a time.

I adored "Muppet Babies." I’d probably still watch it if CBS was running it. It was one of the best of the 80s toons. Baby Fozzie was my favorite. My parents still call bad jokes "Fozzie jokes" or "tomato jokes."

Alas, I missed classics like "Earthworm Jim" and "The Tick" - my family didn’t have cable in the mid-90s, so I only know what I’ve heard.

I’ve been trying to find the name of the gun shooting dino riding toy cartoon show forever. Just yesterday I was looking at a collection of an illustrators work, and there was a box for the toys. It said "Dinosaurriors" though. I don’t know if this was a previous name for Dino Riders or what. Anyone know if they’re the same thing?

Maybe you all can help me there was a show on nickelodean where people got slimed and there were skits and stuff kindof like All That what was that show called???? I too love "donkeylips" he is actually a friend of mine, I met him on vacation in mexico he will be excited to hear all the cool stuff people said about him!!!
