Double Dragon article on deck…

On Deck: I'm currently preparing a tribute to the characters of Double Dragon, along the same lines as the Super Mario one I did recently. It's coming along pretty well, but god damn were the pics tough to get together. Should be up later today. Meanwhile, I should mention that I've gotten a heap of e-mail regarding the Power Rangers article, and almost all of it was about the unfortunate death of Thuy Trang this past year in a car accident. I had no idea - if I had, I might've picked an episode that didn't feature her so prominently. Then again, there weren't any comments that were too disrespecting, unless someone's offended by me telling them that Thuy just didn't know how to convincingly converse with a cardboard cutout.

Actually, I don't think I've ever written an article without some kind of oversight like that. I never really think about the extended details, and rarely research. I'd be a pretty awful journalist. I'm usually pretty flippant so I don't picture the people reading this stuff taking it too seriously. I should probably add a disclaimer to the top of the main page: "If you see an error, pretend it's correct." Though I admit, it is pretty embarrassing to write about such nonsensical immature stuff and not even have my facts straight. Then again, the point of X-E is just to give people an easy, fun read. I don't think I'm putting together an encyclopedia here. X-Encyclopedia? I wonder if the domain's taken. On a completely related note, fitting quarters over your eyelids and pretending that you have alien coin eyes is totally underrated.

Matt, I like the Double Dragon idea. How about doing it for all the D.D. games? Especially the fighting one, where they had secret kill and embarrass you moves. I once knocked the teeth out of the fat purple bastard’s mouth, and I still have no idea how.

God I hated that D.D. movie…so very much. Oh, help me Jeebuz.

Finally, I can see Abobo (my favorite black/white/green villian in the game) in all of his glory. In Double Dragon 3 it says something about Bimmy and Jimmy at the beginning. I wonder who Bimmy is?

I was in some truckstop recently, and I found none other then the sorta-scarce Double Dragon 3 arcade game. It sucks. Really bad. Don’t play it.

Besides forcing you to spend real money on getting power-ups, the game manages to be both impossible and really boring at the same time. Well, maybe not impossible. Insanely difficult, nonetheless.

Just a pointless little addition.

Abobo has gone on to a life of fame on the internet, check out his website:

When I was a kid I remember getting into Double Dragon 2. I thought that some of the bosses were kinda fucked up though. For example, the first boss was a fatass who wore a helmet that let him re-appear and dissappear. The thing is, he would reappear right where he dissappeared, making thata totally useless skill. Matt, if you get the chance, play that game and e-mail me what ya think of it.

One DD game I played for Gameboy, the Bosses were a Kickboxer, Ninjas (HARD Ninjas), Jason(???…I remember a Hockey mask and chainsaw), and a Big, angry black man with a club

Just so you know, if you play the double dragon arcade game with two two players and beat Willy, Jimmy is still the bad guy and you have to fight the second player at the end.
It wasn’t an NES only concept.

hey matt, i never really digged double dragon. but after playing the nes game, (the only one that i hadnt yet played) i started to see its appeal.

however, in the opinion of the tin man, i think theres a better game than dd of that type on the nes. its called river city ransom.

very similar to dd. except you can revisit areas and buy stuff to boogie up your stats rpg style.

i think you may already have the rom.

its a nes game so use an emulator.

oh, and also you should do an article on no holds barred.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, whats that smell.

River City Ransom is great, but Riki Kunio, the game that proceded it, is the GOD OF NES GAMES. Its pretty hard to find a translated rom that wasn’t hacked to become "Skinhead Fighters"(reviewed by the guys at i-mockery.com) but basically, its a game with the two guys from River City Ransom, Ryan and Alex(aka Riki and Kunio) and 10 other guys, as they fight two on two BIG ASS BRAWLS in arenas with spike pits and electrofied walls and stuff.

You put in your name and birthday and bloodtype and it makes you a character. The thing is, if you have the wrong birthday, it makes your guy suck, which has to be a blow to someone’s self esteem.

Its basically everything M.U.S.C.L.E. should have been. I have no idea how long you have to fight to get to the last guys(twin Tigermask clones), as I fought at least 10 matches and haven’t fought them yet…

anyone got the rom of Riki Kunio?

Chestnuts roasted by tin man @ 11/14/2002 3:58 PM

Its pretty hard to find, I actually don’t have it anymore. You can find the patch to translate it, but not the game itself.

I-mockery.com has the retarded skinhead fighter hack of it. The basic gameplay is apparently the same.

i mentioned this before in another thread, but i guess this one is more pertinent. has anyone ever played the game ‘double dragon vs. battle toads?’ it was one of my favorite games, i mean double dragon AND battle toads? that’s a surefire recipe for success.
